Terror trial: Heads you win, tails we lose

halthouse1's picture

Indecision The Hallmark Of The Obama Administration

In a scene eerily reminiscent of the troop level decision in Afghanistan, the Obama administration cannot come to terms with choosing a venue for the terror trial of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, or the type of court he should be tried in, criminal or military. The Attorney General Eric Holder had originally made the decision of criminal court in lower Manhattan, but a firestorm of criticism that began after Mayor Bloomberg switched positions to oppose this has made the President vacillate....

Muslim-American Groups: Just Say No To Body Scanning

Their point is that this is a violation of religious rules concerning modesty. The solution, in the age of terrorists bringing explosives on board planes hidden inside body cavities, would be for anyone that considers body scanning to be an unacceptable intrusion, to drive, take the bus or a train to their destination....

Taliban leadership: One down, thousands to go

Reports of Pakistani Taliban Leader Killed

The unconfirmed reports that Pakistani Taliban leader Hakimullah Mehsud was killed has appeared to set in motion the jockeying among potential suitors for his position. This is evidence of the problem faced by the United States and the rest of the world in trying to eliminate the threat we face from fundamentalist terrorist organizations. The head can be chopped off, but there is no shortage of candidates to take its place.

This seems to be the delusion held by many that only one man can lead a movement that is so ideologically bent on the destruction of the west. The reality, unfortunately, is that there are many. Killing one does not destroy the movement, but may only slow it down temporarily if that...

The Battle of the Bulge and War on Terror

halthouse1's picture

From New York Homeland Security, Michael Haltman

The Greatest Generation Forward to Generations Baby Boomer and X

Although a little slow on the uptake, the United States came to understand the necessity for winning World War II. There was no option for losing, as we faced an enemy led by a leader, Hitler, bent on world domination and in the creation of a world order that was defined by his beliefs of what it should be.

The leaders of the nation and of our allies made decisions that were based on the defeat of an enemy that they knew had to be defeated. These were not easy decisions, as these types of decisions never will be. But they were made not only for the near-term defeat of the enemy, but for what they hoped would be the long-term preservation of our way of life.

Religious Extremists and the Obama Way

"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."  George Santayana

Today, our leaders take a different approach in protecting not only our homeland security, but also the security of the world. It was actually an approach that was attempted with Hitler, but that of course failed miserably as you cannot negotiate with men such as that.

Today, we are playing the game of appeasement, procrastination, negotiation, diplomacy and the mushy carrot and stick approach with an enemy that does not play by these rules. In the same way that Hitler was more than happy to sign the Non-Aggression pact with Russia, Iran is more than happy to string us along, saying one thing and do another because they are aware of the world's lack of resolve for dealing with this problem.

The problem, however, will not go away, but will only become worse as this enemy thrives on what it views to be weakness and capitulation. They do not play by the Marquis of Queensbury Rules or by the rules of the Geneva Convention. To go at them in this way is the equivalent of trying to blow a bunker buster bomb out of the sky with a water pistol as it is descending right on top of you.

·      We had our contemporary Pearl Harbor on September 11, 2001, yet instead of fighting back we call our conflict "overseas contingency operations".
·      Instead of keeping these terrorists at Gitmo where we can keep the United States safe, we look to ship them to the mainland and back to their countries of origin.
·      Instead of pumping them for every last piece of potentially actionable information they may have, we read them their Miranda Rights and bring them into one of the most congested cities in the world to stand trial.
·      Instead of taking matters of national security into our own hands, we farm it out to an organization, the United Nations, that unfortunately could not locate its' own butt with both hands.
·      Instead of letting our enemy now that we mean business, we set deadlines for action that we have no intention of keeping.
·      Instead of acting like the superpower that we are in making our own security decisions, we cede this power to a consensus among allies, some of whom are false.
·      We politicize decisions that are military in nature, so that they either get decided in a way to placate the ACLU or left-wing of the Democrat Party, or they never get decided at all.
·      Instead of strengthening our intelligence gathering capability, the leadership seeks to marginalize it.
The Allied Victory at The Battle of the Bulge Marked The Beginning Of The End For The German War Machine

At a time when veterans of World War II are dying at a rate some estimate to be over 1,000 a day, it is important to remember them and their sacrifice. It is also important to remember the end of one of the fiercest battles of World War II, one that inflicted a devastating blow to the Nazi war machine. While this battle did not mark the end of the war in Europe, it was the beginning of the end for Germany. The battle I speak of is the Battle of the Bulge.

The battle began on December 16, 1944 and ended on January 25, 1945, with the German loss of men and aircraft paving the way for it's ultimate surrender and the end of the war in Europe only months later.

Battle Devastating In The Number Of Lives Lost, Yet Critical To The Security Of The World

Numbers vary as numbers often will, but the death toll of American soldiers killed in this long, drawn out battle totals close to 20,000 with over 80,000 wounded. These soldiers of the Greatest Generation need to be continually remembered and thanked. Thanked for their sacrifices as well as for their contributions to the lives we are able to lead today.

Terrorism can't happen in my backyard. Right?

halthouse1's picture

Can't Happen In The United States Anymore Because The War on Terror Has Been Won

At least that was the opinion of 61% of Americans who were polled just a couple of weeks before the botched Christmas attack on a Northwest Airlines flight into Detroit. Short memories, or out of sight out of mind is the American rule of thumb for crisis management. At least that is what the bad guys count on.
September 11 occurred a very short time ago, particularly in the timeframe utilized by our patient enemy. While we view a year or two of no incidents as "proof" that the war on terror has been won, this is merely hibernation by an enemy for whom time has no meaning....

September 11, 2001 - December 7,1941: Dates That Will Live In Infamy

halthouse1's picture

From The Political Commentator (http://politicsandfinance.blogspot.com)

Dates That Serve To Define The World

Tomorrow, December 7, marks the anniversary of "a date that will live in infamy", the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. This was the event that brought the United States into WW II, ultimately leading to the defeat of what was then a overwhelming threat to the security of the world. Had the Japanese not committed this act, and had the United States not entered the war, who is to know the state of the world today.

That hypothetical gives way to the actual reality of the day, that of the global threat of both terrorism through "conventional" means, as well as through nuclear weapons that could bring global devastation in seconds. Let us never forget that those who wish to control and dictate through the belief that all in the world should be a certain way, whether ethnically, religiously or both, can only be defeated in one way.

As seen with Hitler, and as we are trying to accomplish through appeasement today, a negotiated promise through a signature on a piece of paper is meaningless. The totalitarian desires of these factions know no level of compromise. It is win at all costs and those who wish to attempt to pacify through third parties such as the U.N. or through diplomacy and the threat of sanctions are merely playing into the hands of those who seek to destroy us.

Our enemies believe that the world does not have the stomach or the will to stop them, much as Hitler knew as he marched into country's and made therm his.

As the philosopher George Santayana wrote, and which rings as true today as at any point in history, 'Those who cannot remember the past are doomed to repeat it." Afghanistan, Iran and North Korea are merely symptoms of a much greater problem. But as any doctor will tell you, these symptoms need to be treated, or like a cancer they will continue to flourish and will eventually take over the body.

The Obama Doctrine: What Does It All Mean And Was It Worth The Wait?

halthouse1's picture

From The Political Commentator (http://politicsandfinance.blogspot.com)

The Long Awaited Speech Is In The Books And 30,000 Troops Will Be Heading To Afghanistan With Date Certain Withdrawal

Some tough sounding rhetoric with a smattering of date certain withdrawal. What does it all mean for the United States, our military, homeland security and the world. Do the words of this speech have any bite? Is it a halfway measure? Is it tough sounding talk with plans for date certain withdrawal in order to attempt to placate both his political base and political adversaries? Is the discussion of our coalition of partners reality or fantasy? Who is coming along with us for this ride as President Obama alludes? China? Russia? France? Germany? Anybody?

The Cost Of War

There was a long discussion of the cost of war to this point, going forward, our responsibilities to the world and how it all ties together. How the price of the conflict is a critical factor and cannot be an open ended commitment. This from a president who has done more to expand the deficits of our country on domestic programs in less than one year than presidents have been able to accomplish over the course of full administrations and beyond. The current healthcare bill could add another $1 trillion to our debt. Yet there are limitations to the cost that we are willing to bear on the terrorism, the nuclear front and the security of the world. Interesting.

Date certain in Iraq or Afghanistan will lead to one result. The terrorists sitting on their hands until the proverbial coast is clear. They are not going anywhere. They do not have artificial deadlines they need to abide by. They know that the world and President Obama do not have the stomach for the conflict and they will play the waiting game. Will Afghan youth sign on to be the police when they know we are leaving? It is an old and tired story. The rhetoric of the President is equally worn. These are dangerous times and politics and checkbook budgets do not have a place in the decision making process.

Interesting Thoughts From War On Terror News On The Speech And It's Content

First off: Stop blaming the CinC that was decisive enough to overthrow the Taliban in less time than it took you to decide to half-step.

Secondly: Compromise belongs to politicians, not war. The General needs 40,000 Troops. 30,000 is a half-step compromise.

Third: Be grateful for allies. This is OUR fight and they are helping. The General asked YOU for 40,000 Troops, plus whatever the Allies could muster.

Fourth: Pakistan victories are not YOURS. They stepped up but you did not. Had you decided when the General asked, the Taliban could have been crushed as the Pakis pushed them out of their safe havens.

Fifth: This is not the "fastest" deployment of troops. It is the culmination of the slowest decision in modern history. A half-step decision at that. Had you decided to support the General that you sent to implement the "strategy" you "concluded" in March, the lead elements would already be on the ground, not getting their marching orders for May of next year. They'd be ready when the spring thaws for the new fighting season, rather than waiting on a plane in the US to go kick in the doors of an enemy that emplaced themselves while you consulted political advisors.

Sixth: Victory should be the goal, not a timeline for withdrawal. What cost do you put on lives and liberty? What dollar amount is too much to pay to prevent another attack? What dollar amount do you put on the life of a young Afghan girl that just wants to learn to read?

Seventh: Quit allowing Congress to cut the Military. Recruiters are turning away the few recruits that are qualified.

Eighth: Leadership would have been decisiveness, before NATO leaders got tired of your dithering.
